In a significant milestone for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College Doda successfully managed and discharged a newborn weighing 6 kilograms at birth. This delivery marks one of the heaviest babies ever delivered at the institution.
The baby arrived on 25th October 2025, at 1:20 PM, to a diabetic mother, and developed severe respiratory distress within the first 30 minutes of life. Recognizing the critical condition, medical staff immediately admitted the newborn to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for specialized care and monitoring.
Given the baby’s large-for-gestational-age status and signs of respiratory compromise, healthcare providers initiated specialized neonatal respiratory support without delay. The healthcare team continuously observed key parameters: respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological activity. Over the following days, the infant responded positively to the treatment, leading to gradual weaning of the respiratory support.
In the final 72 hours before discharge, the newborn maintained stable independent breathing, normal oxygenation, and effective temperature regulation. There were no episodes of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation during this period. Following this remarkable recovery, the medical team deemed the baby fit for discharge, subsequently advising routine follow-up care.
This successful management of a heavy newborn underscores the expertise at GMC Doda, thanks to the guidance of HOD Pediatrics Dr. Najmus Saqib and the keen supervision from faculty members Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma. Their leadership paired with the dedicated efforts of senior and junior residents significantly contributed to the baby’s recovery.
Special acknowledgment goes to the nursing and paramedical staff at GMC Doda for their vigilant monitoring and compassionate care. Their unwavering commitment played a vital role in ensuring the successful outcome of this complex case.
This achievement reflects the growing neonatal expertise and teamwork within the Department of Pediatrics at GMC Doda, illustrating its enduring commitment to quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care for newborns and children in the region.
