The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday declined to urgently hear a plea regarding allegations against police action during a protest held by students from the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The protest took place at Jantar Mantar over claims of a NEET-UG 2026 paper leak.
The matter was presented before a Bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant. The petitioner’s counsel sought an urgent hearing, emphasizing the public significance of the issues at hand.
Chief Justice Surya Kant firmly responded, “Don’t waste our time, and don’t waste your time,” indicating that the urgency of the situation did not merit immediate court attention.
The lawyer highlighted that the students protested over crucial issues, including the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, the conduct of the examination, and necessary reforms within the National Testing Agency (NTA).
As the counsel attempted to introduce videos capturing the police action against protesters, Chief Justice Kant reiterated, “We are not interested in videos; we don’t have time to watch,” dismissing the evidence presented.
The Bench ultimately decided not to entertain the request for an urgent hearing, focusing solely on the application of urgency rather than addressing the allegations of police misconduct.
This development occurred just a day after the Delhi High Court also declined to hear a similar plea concerning police actions during the protest.
The CJP, at the forefront of these protests, seeks accountability for the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak. The group demands the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and calls for significant reforms in the examination system.
Protests escalated as demonstrators marched toward Parliament, where clashes erupted between police and protesters. Consequently, this led to accusations of excessive police force and resulted in numerous detentions.
While the Supreme Court’s comments pertained solely to the request for an urgent hearing, they do not constitute any ruling on the details or validity of the allegations raised within the petition.
