On September 30, US President Donald Trump affirmed that Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir fully support his comprehensive plan to resolve the Gaza conflict. Trump highlighted their involvement in negotiations on this crucial issue during a press conference at the White House alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
During the announcement, Trump stated, “This afternoon after extensive consultation with our friends and partners throughout the region, I’m formally releasing our principles for peace, which people have really liked.” His remarks underscored a collaborative approach involving various nations invested in the ongoing peace process.
Trump expressed gratitude to world leaders for their contributions to his proposal, acknowledging significant support from numerous Arab and Muslim countries. “I want to thank the leaders of many Arab and Muslim nations for their tremendous support in developing the proposal along with many of our allies in Europe,” he added.
Trump’s dialogue with regional leaders, including the King of Saudi Arabia and the Emir of Qatar, played a vital role in shaping the peace plan. He noted that all these leaders were “totally involved” in the negotiations, providing insights on acceptable terms and conditions.
Highlighting key figures in the diplomatic process, he acknowledged other influential leaders, including the King of Jordan and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, stating, “They were with us right from the beginning.” Trump emphasized their collaboration in dialogues that have informed the peace proposal.
Trump further revealed that moments prior to his announcement, he received confirmed backing from Sharif and Munir, stating, “They backed this 100 percent.” This support marks a significant diplomatic achievement as Pakistan strengthens its role in regional peace efforts.
The plan to resolve the Gaza conflict envisions a deradicalised zone in Gaza. Trump stated, “If both sides agree to this proposal, the war will immediately end.” The specifications include an immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces to agreed lines and a halt to military operations while ensuring the release of hostages.
The detailed proposal also outlines a humanitarian aspect, stipulating the return of all hostages—alive or deceased—within 72 hours of the agreement being accepted by Israel. Furthermore, the agreement includes provisions for the release of Palestinian detainees.
Following the announcement, foreign ministers from countries including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the UAE, Indonesia, Pakistan, Türkiye, Qatar, and Egypt collectively praised Trump’s leadership in tackling the Gaza conflict. They expressed hope that Trump’s plan would rebuild Gaza, secure humanitarian aid, and prevent further displacement of the Palestinian people.
The joint ministerial statement reiterated a commitment to a comprehensive deal ensuring peace and stability for all parties involved and a sustainable resolution based on international law.
Sharif, who recently attended the UN General Assembly, explored diplomatic opportunities with Trump, and previously hosted Munir at the White House earlier this summer. Their ongoing discussions signify a proactive engagement in facilitating peace in the region.
As discussions progress, observers remain cautious yet hopeful. The plan aims to integrate Gaza with the West Bank under a two-state solution framework, which, if realized, could pave the way towards lasting regional stability.
