Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, shivered last night as temperatures plunged to -2.1°C, marking the coldest night of the winter season so far, according to the Meteorological (MeT) Department.
Data from the MeT indicates that Pahalgam recorded the coldest temperature in the Kashmir Valley, dipping even lower to -3.8°C. These frigid readings signal the onset of harsh winter conditions, affecting daily life across the region.
Director of MeT, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, stated that the weather patterns show no sign of a wet spell for at least a week. He noted, “The night temperatures are likely to remain steady until November 17.” Dr. Ahmad added that a slight improvement in temperatures might occur after this date, but frigid mornings will likely persist.
As temperatures fell below zero, parts of Srinagar and surrounding areas faced significant frost formation during early morning hours. This frost signals the challenges that residents will encounter during the winter months, bringing added difficulties for commuters and school children.
Residents have begun preparing for the cold, layering up against the biting chill. Local vendors report a spike in the sale of winter essentials, including warm clothing and heating appliances. “People are eagerly buying warm clothes as they brace for the severe weather conditions expected this winter,” said a local merchant.
The cold wave has impacted various sectors, including tourism. With heavy frost covering popular tourist spots, visitors may have to navigate icy paths while enjoying the stunning winter landscape. Officials are urging tourists to dress appropriately and stay safe while exploring the Valley’s breathtaking winter scenery.
The chilling temperatures also pose risks for those vulnerable to cold weather conditions. Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have issued advisories, emphasizing the importance of staying warm and safe, especially for the elderly and children who are at greater risk during extreme weather.
As winter settles in across Jammu and Kashmir, the temperature drops serve as a reminder of the season’s challenges. Residents will need to adapt to the dropping mercury, preparing for the long months ahead while hoping for a bit of warmth in the forecast.
