In a significant address on Thursday, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat reaffirmed that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) prioritizes ‘vyakti nirman’ (character building) over political temptations, marking its centenary Vijayadashami celebration in Nagpur. Bhagwat addressed swayamsevaks, sharing insights from the organization’s century-long journey as it rejects calls to engage in political arenas.
In his speech, Bhagwat emphasized the necessity for gradual reforms in the global order to avoid chaos. He stated, “India must present a development model based on a holistic and integrated outlook, rooted in dharma, and offer it to the world.”
The concept of dharma, according to Bhagwat, transcends mere rituals and religious practices. Instead, he described it as the unifying principle that knits the diverse fabric of Indian society together. Through its shakhas, the RSS endeavors to propagate values such as integrity, selflessness, and social leadership that foster social transformation.
“Throughout its 100-year history, the RSS has been tempted with opportunities to enter politics. However, our focus has been unwavering on nurturing character through our shakhas,” Bhagwat emphasized, reflecting the collective experiences of swayamsevaks who stand firmly by the mission of vyakti nirman.
Addressing India’s rich tapestry of languages, religions, and traditions, Bhagwat called for recognizing pluralism as an asset. He remarked, “All communities, including those who have embraced foreign religions, are part of the broader Indian identity,” thereby advocating for harmony and mutual respect among various societal groups.
He urged the necessity for all citizens, especially today’s youth, to remain vigilant against potential discord. Bhagwat critiqued incidents of hooliganism and highlighted the critical role of law enforcement in upholding justice without bias. “It is essential for us to be organized and proactive in safeguarding our peace and harmony,” he suggested, reflecting a call to action for the younger generations.
By celebrating its centenary, the RSS reaffirmed its foundational principles while promoting a vision for a harmonious and integrated India. This approach aligns with Bhagwat’s belief that the right path for sustainable social change lies in fostering strong personal character and community resilience.
As the RSS continues to navigate its identity in a rapidly changing socio-political landscape, Bhagwat’s clarion call for vyakti nirman serves as a reminder of the organization’s core values and its commitment to India’s diverse society.
