On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the centenary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), highlighting its commitment to the principle of “nation first”. This momentous occasion took place at a grand event where Modi praised the organization for its resilience and contributions to nation-building.
Modi emphasized that the RSS has always placed the country above all, enduring numerous challenges throughout its history. He stated, “The Sangh has fought against British atrocities, gave shelter to freedom fighters, and its founder Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar was jailed several times during the freedom struggle.” This legacy of selfless service plays a pivotal role in shaping the nation.
Recalling the uneasy road the RSS has traveled, Modi noted the organization’s resilience against bans and false allegations, showcasing its steadfast resolve. He quoted former RSS chief Madhav Golwalkar, recalling his insightful words: “At times, the tongue may get caught under the teeth, but we do not break the teeth.” This saying exemplifies the RSS’s patience and unwavering spirit in the face of adversity.
During this historic event, Modi unveiled a special ₹100 commemorative coin and a postal stamp, celebrating the centenary of the RSS. The coin features Bharat Mata in Varada Mudra, a first in independent India, alongside the national emblem and swayamsevaks bowing in reverence. Modi expressed pride in this landmark recognition, stating, “This is a moment of great pride as Bharat Mata has been featured on Indian currency for the first time.”
The commemorative stamp portrays the RSS’s vital role in India’s history, specifically its participation in the 1963 Republic Day Parade, reinforcing the Sangh’s long-standing tradition of service.
In the speech, the Prime Minister also highlighted the RSS’s significant contributions during critical moments in Indian history, such as the 1962 war, the 1971 refugee crisis, and the 1984 riots. Modi praised the ongoing commitment of the RSS to principles of equality, compassion, and unity. He noted current Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat’s vision for inclusivity, promoting a unified community with initiatives such as “one well, one temple, one cremation ground.”
Dattatreya Hosabale, general secretary of the RSS, expressed gratitude for the federal recognition accorded to the Sangh’s century-long commitment to the nation. He regarded the commemorative coin and stamp as a tribute to the selfless work carried out by swayamsevaks since the organization’s inception in 1925.
As the RSS embarks on its next century, its ethos of service and nationalism continues to resonate among millions, marking it as a cornerstone of Indian society. The centenary celebrations underscore the unwavering bond between the organization and the nation, calling for renewed dedication to a united India.
