Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has sanctioned ₹30.14 crore for direct online transfer to eligible beneficiaries under various welfare schemes. This amount aims to provide much-needed support to construction workers across Jammu and Kashmir.
Officials confirmed that they allocated the sanctioned funds to all Assistant Labour Commissioners. These funds will be transferred directly into the bank accounts of registered construction workers without delay.
The Labour Department noted that this assistance covers several flagship welfare schemes. These include education support, disability assistance, aid for chronic illness, support for the next of kin of deceased workers, marriage assistance, and meritorious awards for children of registered workers.
During the 22nd meeting of the J&K Building & Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (JKBOCWWB) held in July, the Chief Minister emphasized the need for a more inclusive definition of ‘construction worker’. This approach aims to ensure that all vulnerable labourers in the unorganised sector can benefit from welfare measures.
Omar Abdullah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to exploring innovative policy mechanisms. He believes this will expand coverage, ensure financial security for workers, and align the Board’s operations with national best practices in labour welfare.
“Construction workers are the backbone of our infrastructure development and deserve comprehensive and timely support,” he stated while expressing dedication to safeguarding labour rights and dignity.
In a separate concern, the Chief Minister expressed profound sorrow over a tragic accident involving a bus carrying Indian Umrah pilgrims in Medina, Saudi Arabia, early this morning.
In his statement, he conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured.
Initial reports indicate that a bus carrying 46 Indian pilgrims collided with a tanker while traveling from Mecca to Medina. The collision tragically resulted in the death of 45 pilgrims, leaving only one survivor with serious injuries.
This bus accident highlights the risks that pilgrims face while attending religious journeys abroad. As the government of Jammu and Kashmir extends its support, it underscores the importance of safety measures for those undertaking such significant journeys.
