Omar Abdullah Unveils Gulmarg Convention Centre
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated the Gulmarg Convention Centre today, introducing hopes that this world-class facility will help position Gulmarg as a premier destination for international events. His vision is to have Gulmarg considered as “Asia’s Davos,” aiming to attract global attention to Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism sector.
Architectural Marvel at a Cost of Rs 21 Crore
Constructed at a cost of Rs 21 crore by the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC), the Gulmarg Convention Centre is designed to promote tourism, culture, and business events in the region. The inauguration drew a gathering of notable officials, including Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani and MLA Gulmarg Pirzada Farooq A. Shah.
In addition to the Convention Centre, Omar Abdullah laid the foundation stone for a Ski Hire Shop, developed by the J&K Cable Car Corporation, further strengthening Gulmarg’s tourism infrastructure.
Fostering MICE Tourism in Gulmarg
Addressing the audience, Abdullah highlighted the significance of not only constructing physical infrastructure but also ensuring its sustainable use and maintenance. He quoted, “The easiest thing to build four walls. The real responsibility begins with their use and maintenance.”
The chief minister identified the goal of encouraging Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism. He revealed plans to integrate the Centre with the marketing network of the SKICC, broadening the promotional efforts for the Gulmarg Convention Centre. Abdullah expressed hope for hosting two to three annual high-profile events that would attract global participation.
Enhancing Evening Activities for Tourists
Tourism in Gulmarg extends beyond winter sports; Abdullah underscored the necessity of providing recreational opportunities for tourists during their evenings. He stated, “This facility can change that. By setting up a coffee shop, restaurant, and a digital cinema projection system, we can ensure that tourists have vibrant evening experiences.” This initiative is expected to not only generate revenue but also keep the asset actively engaged with the community.
Abdullah urged government departments to leverage the Gulmarg Convention Centre for meetings, training programs, and official events until private sector interest flourishes. He advocated for utilizing the Centre’s facilities for various government programs, bringing fresh perspectives to different departments.
A Landmark Addition to Gulmarg’s Tourism Profile
Congratulating the NBCC and the Gulmarg Development Authority, Omar Abdullah reaffirmed that the project marks a significant addition to Gulmarg’s tourism landscape. He declared, “With proper management, Gulmarg Convention Centre will not only serve as a hub for conferences and international gatherings but also become a vibrant space for recreational and cultural tourism.”
With Abdullah’s vision and the establishment of the Gulmarg Convention Centre, the region is poised for renewed growth, potentially transforming it into a focal point for international events and enhancing the overall tourism experience in Jammu and Kashmir.
