Night Temperatures Rise in Kashmir as Chillai Kalan Ends

Night temperatures across the Kashmir Valley increased significantly as the 40-day winter period, known as Chillai Kalan, ended on Friday. Officials report this shift provided welcome relief from the severe cold that typically dominates this season.

The Meteorological Department noted various regions, including Srinagar, recorded minimum temperatures rising above the freezing point. This change indicates a positive trend in temperatures across the Valley. In Srinagar, the temperature settled at 1.3 degrees Celsius, a marked increase from the previous night’s minus 0.6 degrees Celsius and 2.2 degrees above the seasonal average.

Other regions joined Srinagar in experiencing above-freezing minimum temperatures. Konibal recorded 1.0 degrees Celsius, Pulwama saw 0.1 degrees, and Kulgam reported 1.1 degrees Celsius. Overall, most weather stations indicated an improvement in night temperatures across the Valley.

However, higher altitude areas continue to experience harsh cold. Sonamarg in the Ganderbal district remained the coldest place in Jammu and Kashmir, with a minimum temperature recorded at minus 10.6 degrees Celsius, which was slightly warmer than the previous night’s minus 11.2 degrees. The famous ski resort of Gulmarg noted minus 9 degrees, while Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded minus 5.3 degrees Celsius.

Among other notable stations, Qazigund reported a low of minus 0.3 degrees Celsius, Kokernag recorded minus 0.6 degrees, and Kupwara faced minus 3.1 degrees Celsius.

Chillai Kalan, which began on December 21, represents the coldest period of winter in the Kashmir Valley, often characterized by frequent snowfalls, especially in elevated regions. With the completion of this significant period, the Valley now transitions into the 20-day Chillai Khurd (small cold), which will later be followed by the 10-day Chillai Bachha (baby cold).

Looking ahead, the Meteorological Department forecasts a fresh western disturbance approaching the region starting Sunday. This may introduce another spell of wet weather, further impacting the local climate.
