India’s star cricketers, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, have made it clear they want to compete in the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, head coach Gautam Gambhir on Tuesday stressed the importance of focusing on current performance rather than future commitments as the team transitions.
The appointment of Shubman Gill as India’s ODI captain marks a significant shift, hinting that the cricketing landscape is changing. Both Kohli and Rohit will be 39 and 40 years old, respectively, by the time the 2027 ODI World Cup rolls around, raising questions about their inclusion in the squad.
“The 50-over World Cup is still two and a half years away. It is important to stay in the present. They are quality players, and their experience could be valuable in Australia. Hopefully, they can deliver a successful tour, along with the team,” Gambhir said, articulating his views on their future.
Sources indicate that the decision about Kohli’s and Rohit’s participation in the World Cup will largely depend on their performances in the upcoming nine ODIs against Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand in the next few months.
Since taking on the role of head coach, Gambhir has focused on revitalizing the team structure. He aims to identify talent and streamline selections for both emerging players and veterans. While discussing what he seeks in potential national players, he stated:
“First and foremost, you assess talent. Then comes work ethic and character, especially in the dressing room and in red-ball cricket. A player’s motivation is equally important. If someone possesses these traits, they are more likely to succeed in Test cricket.”
Gambhir recognized that international cricket remains an “insecure environment” with fierce competition for limited spots. He emphasized the need for stability in selections, explaining:
“It’s essential to give players a longer run. Only 15 can represent the country at any one time, but many others await their opportunity. Therefore, if you choose the right characters, give them time to prove themselves rather than constantly changing the lineup.”
Gambhir expressed his sensitivity regarding team selections, wishing to avoid the term “dropping players.” He stated:
“You don’t drop players, you only select players. It’s crucial to show empathy when someone misses out, rather than being ruthless.”
Commenting on recent performances, Gambhir praised the team’s work ethic during the England tour, concluding:
“The Test squad that went to England was superb in terms of discipline and hard work. That for me was a huge tick.”
