Jaishankar Urges Global South Solidarity and UN Reform

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has emphasized the necessity for solidarity among Global South nations, advocating for a unified push toward United Nations reforms. He made these statements during a high-level meeting of Like-Minded Global South countries on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly held in New York on Tuesday.

Jaishankar’s address came in response to an increasing number of global challenges and risks. In a post shared on X, he underscored that “it is natural that the Global South turns to multilateralism for solutions.” This approach highlights the urgency for collaboration and collective action among developing nations facing shared obstacles.

The minister proposed five key initiatives aimed at amplifying the influence of the Global South within international dialogues. He stressed that existing platforms can be leveraged for enhanced collaboration and solidarity among member nations.

Jaishankar conveyed the importance of comprehensive reforms at the United Nations and in multilateralism to accommodate the perspectives and aspirations of developing countries. “The Global South must bring its unique strengths and experiences to the worldwide stage,” he noted. He cited critical areas like “vaccines, digital capabilities, education, agro-practices, and SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises)” as examples from which the Global South can contribute positively.

In focusing on equitable global solutions, Jaishankar highlighted climate action and climate justice as pivotal areas where Global South initiatives should prioritize their own interests. “We must develop initiatives that resonate with our needs, rather than merely adopting the narratives from the Global North,” he emphasized, calling for a more balanced dialogue about pressing global issues.

Furthermore, Jaishankar pointed towards the evolving domain of technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, as a crucial frontier that requires input and engagement from the Global South. “We cannot afford to lag in the changing global landscape,” he asserted, advocating for greater participation and investment in the technological advancements shaping economies worldwide.

Jaishankar reiterated India’s persistent advocacy for the Global South in various international forums. By doing so, he reaffirmed India’s commitment towards ensuring that developing nations are not sidelined and can play an integral role in influencing global policies and decisions.

The minister’s vision for a more inclusive and responsive international system resonates loudly given the increasing multipolarity in global governance. It reflects a clear call for developing nations to unify, collaborate, and actively push for reforms that will enhance their voices in the international arena.
