In a remarkable achievement, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully managed a newborn weighing an astonishing 6 kilograms. Born to a diabetic mother on October 25, 2025, at 1:20 PM, this exceptional infant ranks among the heaviest newborns delivered at the institution.
Initially, the baby faced significant challenges when it developed severe respiratory distress just 30 minutes after birth. Acting swiftly, the healthcare team admitted the newborn to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for advanced medical intervention and continuous monitoring.
Due to the infant’s large-for-gestational-age condition and symptoms of respiratory compromise, medical staff initiated specialized neonatal respiratory support. The NICU team closely monitored vital signs, including the baby’s respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological responses. Across several days, the child showed promising improvement, allowing medical staff to progressively decrease respiratory assistance.
In the crucial 72-hour period before the baby’s discharge, he demonstrated stable independent breathing, normal oxygen levels, and effective temperature regulation. There were no recorded instances of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation. Following thorough evaluation and verification of consistent clinical stability, the newborn was discharged in healthy condition with recommendations for routine follow-up.
The success of this complex case resulted from the skilled guidance of Dr. Najmus Saqib, the Head of Pediatrics, alongside faculty members Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K.
