The Congress party has called on the Indian government to urgently address the legitimate aspirations of the people of Ladakh, highlighting their distress and anguish in light of recent protests. On Friday, Congress general secretary in-charge communications, Jairam Ramesh, asserted that the government must not merely engage in discussions but take concrete steps to meet these aspirations promptly.
This demand follows violent protests for statehood in Ladakh on Wednesday, which resulted in the tragic loss of four lives and injured around 90 others. The unrest underscores a growing sense of discontent among the Ladakhi population, a sentiment that Ramesh strongly voiced.
Six years ago, when the Union Territory of Ladakh was established, residents held high hopes for progress and autonomy. However, Ramesh stated that this enthusiasm has since transformed into profound disappointment. He remarked on X that the local populace now finds their land and employment rights under serious threat.
Ramesh criticized the current administrative structure, voicing concerns over the overpowering role of the Lieutenant Governor and the bureaucracy, which has overshadowed local governance. He remarked that Ladakh’s residents have only experienced extensive dialogue regarding their rightful demands for protections under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and the establishment of an elected legislature.
A further complication arises due to external factors, such as the tensions with China. Ramesh pointed to the “great uncertainty” created by China’s unilateral actions along the Line of Actual Control, referring to the Prime Minister’s previous statements that he characterized as a clean chit to China.
The strategic, cultural, and ecological significance of Ladakh to India cannot be overstated, emphasized Ramesh. He affirmed that the people of Ladakh have always demonstrated unwavering patriotism. Their current plight should stir the conscience of the Government of India.
“Their distress and anguish must awaken the Government of India’s conscience—not just for even more talks, but for actually fulfilling their legitimate aspirations in full measure at the very earliest,” he urged.
In the wake of the protests, a tense calm now envelops Ladakh. Police and paramilitary forces have imposed a strict curfew in Leh town to maintain order. This precaution follows the violent incidents that erupted during a strike led by the Leh Apex Body (LAB), which seeks an extension of the Sixth Schedule rights and statehood for Ladakh.
Authorities have already detained at least 50 individuals in connection with the disturbances, signaling the administration’s firm stance on restoring peace. A proactive approach to dialogue and community engagement will be crucial to easing tensions and fostering a sense of security among the residents of Ladakh.
