Azam Khan and Son Abdullah Sentenced in 2019 Forgery Case

Senior Samajwadi Party leader Mohammad Azam Khan and his son Abdullah Azam received sentences of up to seven years in prison on Monday. The special MP/MLA court in Rampur convicted them of forgery in a 2019 case involving the illegal procurement of two PAN cards.

Special Magistrate Shobhit Bansal pronounced the verdict after carefully evaluating documentary evidence and witness statements. Prosecution Officer Rakesh Kumar Maurya confirmed the court’s decision, highlighting the gravity of the offenses committed.

The prosecution indicated its intent to review the judgment and may file an appeal if they deem the sentences insufficient. “We will examine the case thoroughly,” Maurya stated. This suggests a potentially protracted legal battle ahead.

Upon inquiry about custody following the conviction, Maurya assured, “Yes, absolutely,” confirming that both Azam Khan and Abdullah would be taken into custody.

The initial complaint originated in 2019 at Rampur’s Civil Lines police station, filed by BJP leader Akash Saxena. He alleged that the father-son duo violated several sections of the IPC, which include cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy.

The prosecution presented compelling evidence showing that Abdullah acquired a PAN card from the Income Tax Department using a falsified date of birth, January 1, 1993. This date reportedly corresponded with his school records and bank details, raising suspicions about the legitimacy of his claims.

The court concluded that Abdullah had acted “in conspiracy with his father” to secure the forged PAN card for official purposes. This case exemplifies the ongoing scrutiny of political figures and raises questions about transparency and accountability.

The ramifications of this conviction may have significant implications for their political careers. Azam Khan, a prominent figure in UP politics, has faced various legal challenges over the years. The SAMAJWADI PARTY, of which he is a senior leader, might experience reputational setbacks due to this ruling.

The broader political landscape could shift as this case evolves, influencing public perception and electoral strategies leading up to future elections. No immediate reactions from the Samajwadi Party have surfaced, leaving many wondering how they will respond to this legal defeat.
