The annual Amarnath Yatra faced suspension from the Baltal route on Friday, July 7, due to inclement weather conditions and essential repair work on the trekking path, local officials reported. The pilgrimage is one of the most revered journeys in India, attracting thousands of devotees each year.
Officials confirmed that the yatra has also been suspended from the Pahalgam route as they undertake necessary repairs. Heavy rains lashed the Baltal area on Thursday night, triggering a minor flash flood at one location; fortunately, no loss of life or damage to property occurred.
As a precautionary measure amid adverse weather and ongoing repairs, officials barred all pilgrims from proceeding towards the holy cave shrine via the Baltal route. Currently, repair work is underway, ensuring that the path remains safe for devotees.
The Amarnath Yatra began on July 3, and so far, approximately 4.5 lakh devotees have visited the sacred site, which houses a naturally formed ice lingam, a symbol of Lord Shiva. The yatra is expected to conclude on August 28, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan, carrying significant spiritual importance.
Authorities hope to resume the pilgrimage as soon as the weather improves and repairs complete, ensuring a safe and fulfilling experience for all devotees. Local officials continue to monitor the weather closely and are in constant communication with relevant agencies to provide updates to pilgrims.
