Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra opposed the Election Commission’s (EC) proposal for Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in Kerala during her visit to the region. The opposition centers on concerns about the integrity of electoral rolls.
Priyanka addressed the media on Wednesday in Wayanad, stating the Congress party’s intention to oppose the SIR initiative both within and outside Parliament. “The Election Commission is planning to carry out SIR of voter lists in many states, including Kerala, and we will strongly oppose it,” she asserted.
She accused the Election Commission of using the SIR process to manipulate electoral lists in favor of political interests, thereby undermining democracy. “Given how they have done it in Bihar, we have fought against it in Parliament and outside it. We will continue to fight against it everywhere,” Priyanka explained.
Describing the SIR process as “the only way of committing fraud and cheating in the election,” she referenced the controversial implementation in Bihar. “If that is what they are going to do in every state, then it is an affront to democracy, and we have to fight it,” she declared emphatically.
During her visit, which lasts two days, she also inaugurated the newly constructed Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Government Ayurveda Dispensary in the Ernad locality of the Malappuram district, falling within her constituency. This initiative reflects the Congress party’s ongoing efforts to improve healthcare facilities in the region.
Prianka arrived at Karipur airport in the morning and travelled by road to Wayanad, where she plans to inaugurate various development projects. Party sources indicated that her agenda aims to connect with local constituents and address their pressing concerns.
In recent weeks, the SIR process has sparked considerable controversy in Bihar, where critics have raised alarm over its potential to disenfranchise voters. Experts argue that any misconduct in managing electoral rolls is detrimental to fair elections and erodes public trust in the electoral process.
Priyanka’s remarks resonate with widespread sentiment among various political groups. The potential impact of the Election Commission’s actions in Kerala could influence voter turnout and engagement in the upcoming elections.
As the Congress party voices its opposition, the political landscape in Kerala remains charged. With elections approaching, the issue of electoral integrity will play a pivotal role in shaping public opinion and party strategies.
