Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences, and Prime Minister’s Office, Dr. Jitendra Singh, visited the India Meteorological Department (IMD) today. During his visit, he reviewed the indigenous Multi-Hazard Early Warning Decision Support System (DSS), noting its significant achievement of saving ₹250 crore.
Dr. Singh commended IMD for developing a self-reliant, technology-driven, and citizen-centric forecasting platform that enhances disaster preparedness and public safety across India. The Minister highlighted that the DSS not only reduces the dependency on foreign vendors but also saves an additional ₹5.5 crore in annual maintenance costs. This aligns perfectly with the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” vision aiming for economic independence.
In addition, Dr. Singh reviewed “Mausamgram” (Har Har Mausam, Har Ghar Mausam), a citizen-focused weather information platform providing accurate hyperlocal forecasts at the village level. This innovative system offers hourly forecasts for up to 36 hours, three-hourly forecasts for a 5-day period, and six-hourly forecasts for up to 10 days. The users can access these forecasts easily by inputting a PIN code, location name, or by selecting specific administrative divisions like state, district, block, and gram panchayat. Remarkably, “Mausamgram” supports all official Indian languages, thereby ensuring accessibility for every citizen.
The IMD not only modernized its forecasting process but also extended the lead time of alerts from 5 days to 7 days. As a result, they cut down the forecast preparation time by three hours while enhancing accuracy by an impressive 15–20%.
During interactions with IMD officials, Dr. Singh stressed the importance of incorporating AI-based tools into “Mausamgram” for enhanced interactivity and user-friendliness. He pointed out the need to upgrade the Multi-Hazard Early Warning System to ensure that citizens receive clear, actionable alerts to respond effectively to disasters.
Dr. Singh expressed his congratulations to the IMD team for their achievement in winning the National Award for e-Governance 2025, recognized during the 28th National Conference on e-Governance held in Visakhapatnam. This award highlights IMD’s excellence in providing exemplary digital public service delivery through the DSS.
Additionally, the Minister praised the Department’s initiatives under the Special Swachhata Program, which successfully generated ₹30 lakh from the disposal of e-waste and old files, and cleared out an impressive 600 square meters of space. He participated in the “Special Swachhata Program 5.0” at IMD’s headquarters, “Mausam Bhavan”, where he also planted a sapling under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign and honored 50 “Safai Mitras” for their remarkable contributions to cleanliness.
Looking ahead, Dr. Singh shared the vision of Mission Mausam. By installing advanced meteorological instruments, IMD aims to significantly enhance its forecasting capabilities by 2030. The initiative foresees capabilities for 5×5 km-scale hazard forecasting, dynamic impact-based forecasting, and risk-based early warnings. The ambitious goal is to ensure last-mile connectivity, allowing early warnings to reach every household and fulfilling the overarching aim of “Har Har Mausam, Har Ghar Mausam.”
