Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare and Education, Sakeena Itoo, inaugurated the Annual Sports Meet-2025 at Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar today. This two-day event kicked off at the Boys Hostel playground in Bemina, bringing together healthcare professionals and students to celebrate sports and fitness.
In her address, Minister Itoo stressed the vital connection between physical and mental well-being and its crucial role in enhancing the delivery of healthcare services. She praised GMC Srinagar for organizing the event, highlighting the significance of sports and recreational activities as essential tools for stress management. Itoo said these activities are particularly important for students and professionals facing the pressures of their medical careers.
Calling on the GMC administration to improve the facilities at the Boys Hostel playground, Itoo encouraged increased participation in extracurricular activities among students. She believes that enhanced sports facilities can lead to better engagement in physical fitness, which ultimately benefits the healthcare sector.
Under the guidance of Chairman Sports Committee Dr. Salim Iqbal, the sports meet showcases a diverse range of competitions. Participants can engage in sports like cricket, volleyball, football, and badminton, along with indoor games such as table tennis, carrom, and tug of war. The meet also features various track and field events including 100m, 200m, 400m races, relay, shot put, javelin throw, and discus throw.
The event promises not only competitive spirit but also fun, with games like matka race, sack race, and spoon and egg race. These activities aim to foster camaraderie and promote holistic well-being among medical professionals and students alike.
Notable attendees at the opening ceremony included Principal Dr. Iffat Hassan Shah, Administrator Mohammad Ashraf Hakak, as well as Heads of Departments, Medical Superintendents, faculty members, students, and staff. Their support underscores the collective effort in prioritizing physical health as a cornerstone of medical education.
