Four Dead, 30 Injured in Leh Clashes Amid Statehood Protests

Four people died and 30 others sustained injuries during violent protests in Leh, Ladakh, on Wednesday. This unrest erupted amid demonstrations calling for statehood and the extension of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. Officials reported that these clashes took place during a shutdown organized by the Ladakh Apex Body (LAB).

The authorities revealed that protesters clashed with security personnel and resorted to vandalism, targeting a local BJP office and damaging several vehicles. The aggressive response from the police included resorting to firing to restore order after violence escalated.

Protesters accused the police of causing the fatalities, claiming the four victims died from police gunfire. This allegation highlights the tension between local demands for greater autonomy and the government’s response to civil unrest.

The unrest in Leh, which peaked on Wednesday, grew out of escalating frustrations over statehood demands. The LAB’s youth wing called for the protests following a significant health crisis among hunger strikers advocating for these demands. Two of the hunger strikers required hospitalization on Tuesday due to deteriorating health, igniting sentiments within the community.

This confrontation marks a significant moment in Ladakh’s ongoing struggle for rights and representation since its status changed in 2019 when it was carved out from Jammu and Kashmir.

The community has expressed its dissatisfaction with the current governance and demands the Indian government heed their calls for autonomy, which they view as essential for preserving their culture and securing development.

Reports indicate that the situation remains tense in Leh, with a heavy presence of security forces to prevent further violence. Authorities have implemented measures to ensure peace as officials attempt to engage with community leaders to address grievances.

As the protests continue, the administration faces increasing pressure to respond to the demands of the citizens. Local leaders call for dialogue with the government to discuss grievances and potential pathways to achieving statehood.
