A powerful cloudburst struck the Chatroo area of Kishtwar district during the early hours of Saturday, damaging multiple houses and structures. This incident occurred around 2:30 a.m., triggered by heavy rainfall that has been persistent across the region.
Officials reported significant damage to both residential and non-residential buildings; however, thankfully, there have been no reports of casualties or injuries. Emergency response teams arrived quickly to respond to the disaster.
Following the cloudburst, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Chatroo, along with local police and civil administration teams, commenced damage assessments and initiated relief measures. Restoration work is actively underway to restore normalcy in the affected areas.
The cloudburst coincided with an ongoing spell of moderate to heavy rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir. The Meteorological Department had previously warned of intense showers, predicting the risks of flash floods, landslides, mudslides, and potential waterlogging in susceptible regions.
In a parallel weather-related incident, heavy rain led to substantial waterlogging in the Pahlipora area of Shopian district in south Kashmir. Rainwater flooded numerous homes, prompting the deployment of police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel for rescue and relief operations.
Officials emphasized the importance of vigilance, particularly for residents in low-lying and landslide-prone areas. Authorities urged them to steer clear of streams, nallahs, and unstable slopes until conditions improve.
