Monsoon Set to Arrive in North Bengal in 3-4 Days: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday announced that the southwest monsoon is on track to reach West Bengal’s sub-Himalayan districts, including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Jalpaiguri, within the next three to four days. This significant weather development is particularly noteworthy as it comes after a delay from the normal entry date of June 6.

As the days approach the anticipated monsoon arrival, the northern districts of West Bengal already experience pre-monsoon conditions, with heavy rains expected shortly. The IMD’s latest bulletin indicates favorable conditions for the southwest monsoon’s advancement into various parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal.

Despite the moisture-laden atmosphere, southern Bengal encounters a humid climate, with scattered rain in some areas. The IMD predicts heavy rainfall over the next two days specifically in the sub-Himalayan districts, which include Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and the previously mentioned regions.

Rainfall data collected over the past 24 hours prior to Monday morning shows that Alipurduar district recorded the highest amount of precipitation in West Bengal, with a staggering 133 mm. Meanwhile, Jalpaiguri received 53 mm, Cooch Behar 18 mm, Darjeeling 7.8 mm, and Kalimpong 19 mm in light to moderate showers. These figures illustrate the area’s established propensity for seasonal downpours and the importance of the impending monsoon.

The IMD’s predictions serve as a crucial reminder for farmers and residents alike as they prepare for a period of increased rainfall. Heavy precipitation has the potential to significantly benefit agriculture but can also lead to waterlogging and related challenges.
