BJP MLC intensifies crusade against momos, use of Ajinomoto, says samples found unsafe

Jammu, Jun 15: Intensifying crusade against sale of momos and use of ajinomoto salt in food items by the hotel industry, BJP MLC Ramesh Arora today said that out of seven samples of momos tested by the Drug and Food Supply Department, six were found positive and have health hazards among its consumers especially the children.

”At least seven samples of momos were collected by the department from posh localities of this winter capital and as per report, they have been found unhygienic and unsafe having health hazards,’’ Mr Arora told reporters here this afternoon.

Representing the NGO named ‘Naya Sawera’, the MLC said that the body has been constituted comprising civil society members to fight against sale of momos.

”We want that the government should impose blanket ban on sale of momos in every nook and corner of the state besides use of Ajinomoto salt in food items on sale in the hotels, restaurants and clubs,’’ he demanded.

”Momos have been found to be the root cause of several life-threatening diseases, including cancer of the intestine,’’ the MLC said, adding, ”Ajinomoto or Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), a kind of salt, causes serious diseases, including cancer. It is responsible for converting a minor headache into migraine.’’ He also listed the ill-effects asserting that the salt induces the pancreas to excrete extra drops of insulin, causing imbalance in the body, and prompts people to overeat as it triggers hunger.

”Besides memory loss, regular consumption for two to three years causes cancer of the stomach. They are found to be more harmful than alcohol and psychotropic drugs,’’ he said.

The MLC however, said that he has also approached to the State Health Minister Bali Bhagat and he has assured him to impose ban of sale of momos, noodles and other Chinese food items. ”Junk food has already taken a toll on our children. There is a need to awaken the people,’’ he said.

He further said that dishes ‘Rajmah-Rice’,‘Dal-Chawal’ are traditional foods for people of Jammu, but the dhaba owners and the hoteliers have also started using Ajinomoto to cook them to make them more-tastier, which is alarming. – See more at: http://www.thenewsnow.co.in/newsdet.aspx?q=31309#sthash.ApZa1azW.dpuf
